About the Maine Climate Office

Maine's climate spans three broad divisions – Coastal, Southern Interior, and Northern – within which there are distinctions such as across the western mountains and along the coast east and west of Penobscot Bay. In the basic definition, climate is average weather. Changes in day-to-day weather and seasonal, annual, and longer-term climate impact economic activity in agriculture, forestry, natural resources, transportation, tourism, and in other areas such as public health.

The mission of the Maine Climate Office is to provide climate-related services to state, local, and federal agencies, businesses, and to Maine citizens. Our office is located at the University of Maine in Orono and is overseen by the Maine State Climatologist, Dr. Sean Birkel, with support from Cooperative Extension and the Climate Change Institute.

If you have a climate/weather question or data request, please fill out this request form and someone will respond as soon as possible.
